Geomagnetic

Normal person reaction: a Square-person is shown quoting a newspaper - Says here a geomagnetic storm is coming. A casual-looking Triangle-person is standing next to them holding binoculars, saying: I'm ready! Video game player reaction: the same Square-person is shown quoting a newspaper. A Triangle-person next to them says: I'm ready!!! but this time they are wearing trapper's fur hat, a large backpack with bedding rolled up, a bow, three arrows, wearing a mask, with a cellphone device and a large knife at their belt.

Normal person reaction:

  • Says here a geomagnetic storm is coming…
  • I’m ready!

Video game player reaction:

  • Says here a geomagnetic storm is coming…
  • I’m ready!!!

This is a riff on the survival genre of video games, where player is facing general adversity. The reason for this adversity doesn’t matter, and is often given a B-movie cover story - which is a long-established tradition for video games, and doesn’t impact the gameplay.

The particular game that inspired this comic is The Long Dark:

a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies – only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.
