I wanted a saying that encapsulates the survivalist quality of getting older.

Assuming we can believe popular crime fiction, a victim of assault frequently has attacker’s skin under their fingernails. And so as we age, the scars of the many years deposit under our fingernails too - evidence of the challenges and misfortunes we faced on the way.
